Transplanting Tomatoes Into Cups

Transplanting tomatoes into larger cups!

Over the weekend, we transplanted our tomatoes into cups!

As I said in my seedling update post, my tomatoes were getting super leggy. They needed transplanted ASAP!  I wasn't quite ready to put them in the garden just yet, so we transplanted them into bigger containers.

This proved to be an enormous task!

My husband & I worked for HOURS getting these little tomatoes transplanted!

It was quite the task but I'm so happy with the results!

Even though it took a long time, it was a fairly easy process.

Planting our seeds in the Jiffy pellets helped so much!  We just put the pellet in the cup & put dirt around it.  The pellets will break free over time so we didn't have any prep work at all.  We did one flat of dirt & that took a while to get everything separated.

The reason it was so time consuming was the number of plants we have!  It didn't look like a lot going into it, but it turned out to be a few hundred plants!  We also had to divide quite a few, so that resulted in even more plants!

We also ran out of containers for the cups!  I want to try to take them outside a little bit, so I wanted them in containers I could easily move inside & outside.

I started off with some old cake pans that had handles.  Then, we found some boxes that came with our Chewy orders!  Those worked really well, but we didn't have a lot of them!  By the end, we had a mixture of old cookie sheets, some flats with the plastic top in the bottom & a huge plastic container we had in the basement!  It's quite the mishmash of things!  But it works!

Of course, after it was done, we realized we planted way too much!  In our defense, we didn't expect a huge yield from the old seeds we used.  It ended up being much better than expected, so now we have hundreds of plants!

We're going to put some of them in the garden this weekend.  After that, we'll probably end up selling the rest!

It's been really fun seeing these little plants grow up!
