Crafting a Coat Rack from Reclaimed Barn Wood | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

Hey there, Besties! 🌟

Today, I'm diving deep into the heart of rustic charm with a project that's as much about preserving memories as it is about functionality. Transforming an old piece of barn wood into a charming coat rack has been a delightful journey, one that I'm excited to share with you!

Finding Beauty in the Old

I've always had a soft spot for everything rustic and worn, those pieces that tell a story. Our entryway needed a coat rack, and while we initially settled for a thrift store find, it never quite felt right. It was too modern, too devoid of character for our cozy, history-filled home. So, in true DIY spirit, I decided it was time for a makeover.

The Birth of a Project

The inspiration struck while working on another venture—a table with the most beautifully aged boards you can imagine. Once I saw the character that a bit of stain could draw out from those tired boards, I was hooked. I knew I needed to bring that rustic warmth to our coat rack.

With a vision in mind, I scoured for the perfect piece of old barn wood. When I found it, it was as if it was waiting just for me. We sized it up, aiming for a slightly larger backdrop than the original rack, to give it that bold, statement look.

A Touch of Walnut

Staining the wood in 'Special Walnut' was a game-changer. It highlighted every grain and notch, each telling its own tale of years gone by. But, to ensure it was not just a piece of art but a functional part of our home, I sealed it with a coat of sealer for a smooth finish.

The Hooks: A Nod to the Past

The original coat rack's hooks had a charm I couldn't part with. Reusing them was not just a cost-effective choice but a nod to the blend of old and new that I adore. We carefully positioned and drilled holes for the hooks on our new rustic board with the old rack as a guide.

The Final Touch

And just like that, our new coat rack was ready, standing proudly by our side door. It's more than just a place to hang coats; it's a piece that brings rustic vibes and warmth to our home, a testament to the beauty of upcycling and cherishing the old.

Wrapping Up

I can't help but smile every time I pass by our new coat rack. It's a reminder that with a little love and creativity, we can transform the forgotten into something truly special.

Remember, Besties, in our journey of life and DIY, it's not just about the destination but the joy and stories we collect along the way. Keep shining, and keep crafting! 🛠️💕🏡

Transformed vintage rocking horse with a fresh coat of paint and a newly stained seat, perfect for home decor or a child's playtime. | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

Hey, Besties!

Guess what? I have a heartwarming tale of a little rocking horse that got a fabulous makeover! My lovely aunt gifted me this charming rocking horse, gracing her front porch for years. I was already smitten with its cuteness, but you know me—I couldn't resist giving it a little TLC!

The Prep Work

First, I used a paint stripper to remove the chipping paint. After letting it work its magic, my husband and I teamed up to sand down the horse, aiming for a smooth, flat surface to welcome its new finish like a warm hug.

A Seat with a View

Amid our sanding session, my hubby had a lightbulb moment. The existing seat was on the thin side, so he crafted a new, slightly larger one from a board we had lying around. I stained the seat, embracing my newfound love for mixing painted and stained pieces. It adds so much character.

Time for a Paint Party

With the horse sanded to near perfection, it was time to bring out the paint! I opted for one of my all-time favorite colors, a warm white that I've used on everything from my coffee station cabinet to random knick-knacks. A few coats later, and voila!

The Final Reveal

The rocking horse is now not just a display piece but a treasure filled with character and love. And guess what? If we ever have a younger foster placement, it's ready for some real rocking action!
