I’m all about things that are old & rustic looking.
We originally had a different coat rack near our side door. We found it at a thrift store & while I liked having the storage, I wasn’t a huge fan of the coat rack itself. It was a just little too modern for me…
So I deconstructed it & made a new one!
I was working on another project before this (a table that I’ll share soon!) that had old boards on the top that I stained. I was in love with how much character the old & tired boards had once I put some stain on them. I now wanted to find all the old boards & stain them!
I knew an old board would be perfect for the back of the coat rack, so I located one! My husband then cut it to the size I wanted for the coat rack. Using the old coat rack as a template, we decided to cut the board slightly bigger.
Once the board was cut, I stained it with the color ‘Special Walnut’ (the same I used on the rocking horse seat!) Once it was dry, I thought the board was still a rough for my liking, so I added a coat of sealer to the top to smooth it out just a bit.
Then it was time to put the hooks on.
I took the hooks off of the old coat rack. I really liked the hooks on the old coat rack; I just wasn’t a huge fan of the backing. Also, coat hooks can be expensive, so I used what I already had! Once the hooks were removed, it was easy to use the old rack as a template for drilling holes on the new board backing. We also modified the hook spacing to accommodate for the new board size.
And it was done! I love it so much more than the old coat rack! It gives off the rustic vibes I love!
Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and adore finding out additional on this topic. If feasible, as you acquire expertise, would you thoughts updating your blog with much more details? It is extremely useful for me.
