We actually made this bed frame bench several months ago, but I’m just getting around to sharing it today! It’s actually undergoing another makeover right now, so I wanted to share the first version of it!
Last summer, I became obsessed with bed frame benches. I thought they were really cool & wanted one of my own.
I finally found a complete headboard/footboard set that I liked & started building a bed frame bench!
I really loved the design of the bed frame. It was also insanely cheap, so I just couldn’t pass it up!
This project was constructed of recycled materials. Instead of going to the home improvement store & buying wood pieces, my husband & I took a look around our basement first. We came across an old cabinet that had seen better days. It was actually on it’s way out to the burn pile! As you can tell, it was full of dust & dirt & whatever else!
But! It was the exact same color as the bed frame! It was also free!
My husband cut the cabinet pieces so he could make a frame for the seat. Instead of using the footboard for the sides, he made his own with the cabinet pieces. I think it makes the bench look super unique.
Once the seat frame was attached, he nailed the footboard to the front of the frame.
Then it was time to paint!
This is also where the troubles began. After several coats of paint & sealer, I noticed the original red color of the frame was bleeding through! I finally ended up painting it all over again & sealing it with wax. You can’t tell by these pictures, but the bleed through was still there slightly.
The bed frame bench sat upstairs in our house for several months. It has been replaced with our latest bed frame bench & went back to the basement for a new & improved makeover!
Now, why are we giving this bed frame bench a makeover again?
The truth is that we were never completely happy with the result. In the time since we made this bench, we’ve made 2 other bed frame benches & have learned a lot. Gradually, we’ve found our style & groove with building these bed frame benches. I was still upset about the red spots coming through. The nail holes in the front were super visible & annoying. We also didn’t think it had a lot of character.
After making a few bed frame benches, we were ready to come back to this project with our newfound knowledge.
I’ll show you the final results soon!
