Seed Starting 2021

Seed starting 2021 is underway!

I began my 2021 seed starting in mid March.  It is a little early for seed starting but I was too excited to wait any longer!

The suggestion for my zone is to seed start about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.  Our last frost date is in mid May.  I'm still going to wait to plant outside until Memorial Day weekend just to be completely safe.  That will put my seedlings at about 10-11 weeks (I planted on different days).

To seed start, I used a peat pellet greenhouse.  I used the pellets last year & loved how easy they were to work with.  I also like how the entire flat of plants is in its own greenhouse.

Using the peat pellets can seem a little costly, but it averages out to around 25 cents a plant between the pellets & seed costs.

I currently have the seedlings upstairs so they can be warmer.  It's a little chilly in our basement right now, but as it warms up, I'll eventually move the seedlings down there.

My plan is to repot the seedlings into cups once they get more established & move them into the basement.  I did this last year & had great results.  My current seedlings are already starting to get a little leggy.  Once I repot them, I'll put them under lights in the basement so they won't have to reach for the light anymore.

We're currently working on building a greenhouse (more details coming soon!) so I hopefully won't have this problem again next year!

I'll share the tomato & pepper varieties I planted in an upcoming post!
