Easy Herb Propagation Techniques | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

Hey there, Besties! 🌟

Is your garden begging for more greenery but your wallet saying, "Hold on there!"? Well, I've got some fabulous news for you! Propagating your own herbs isn't just for the green thumbs or expert gardeners. Today, I'm diving into the "lazy gardening" technique of sticking herb cuttings directly into the soil—a simple, cost-effective method to expand your garden.

Why Propagate Herbs?

Propagating herbs is not only economical but also incredibly satisfying. It allows you to multiply your favorite herbs without spending extra bucks at the garden center. Whether you want to enhance your meals with fresh flavors or add some green to your space, this method is a perfect choice.

Herbs That Love to Root in Soil

While many herbs can be propagated by water, here are some that thrive when their cuttings are planted directly in soil:

  • Mint: Known for its aggressive growth, mint is a perfect candidate for direct soil propagation. Simply cut, stick it in the dirt, and watch it take off!

  • Rosemary: This fragrant herb roots well in well-draining soil. Ensure it's kept moist, and you'll have new plants in no time.

  • Thyme and Sage: Both herbs root easily when planted directly in light, sandy soil.

  • Oregano: Similar to thyme, oregano cuttings adapt well when planted in moist, fertile soil.

Step-by-Step Guide to Propagating Herbs in Soil

  1. Prepare Your Cuttings: Select healthy, non-flowering stems from your existing herb plants. Cut about 4-6 inches from the tip, making sure to cut just below a leaf node.

  2. Prep the Soil: Use a pot with good drainage filled with a mix of potting soil and sand or perlite. This ensures excellent drainage, which is crucial for root development.

  3. Plant Your Cuttings: If you have it on hand, dip the cut end into rooting hormone. This step is optional but can help encourage root growth. Make small holes in the soil with a stick or pencil, place your cuttings inside, and firm the soil around them.

  4. Create the Right Environment: Water the cuttings well and cover the pot with a plastic bag to create a mini-greenhouse effect. This maintains humidity and warmth, speeding up the rooting process.

  5. Care and Patience: Place your new plant babies in a spot with indirect sunlight and keep the soil moist. In a few weeks, check for roots by gently tugging on the cuttings. If you feel resistance, congratulations—you've got roots!

Greenhouse Dreams: Turning Our Gardening Fantasy into Reality! | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

Hey there, Besties! 🌟✨

I'm so excited. I just couldn't wait to share this with you - we're building a greenhouse! 🌱🏠

Embarking on a Greenhouse Dream Despite Soaring Lumber Prices

The journey to our little greenhouse has been filled with anticipation and a bit of a budget puzzle. With lumber prices hitting the roof, our greenhouse plans seemed a tad shaky. But guess what? We found a budget-friendly solution by sourcing rough-cut lumber from a local sawmill. Talk about a win!

The First Steps: Leveling and Laying the Foundation

Our greenhouse adventure began with some groundwork. We're talking about leveling the area with stones and dreaming of turning it into a charming flower garden (because, let's be honest, mowing is not my cup of tea). We've covered the area around the greenhouse, but there's still some stone shopping.

The Framework: Building Tall Walls and a Sturdy Base

Next up was constructing the platform, the stage for our greenhouse. And let me tell you, the walls? They're sky-high! I had this vision of incorporating old doors, meaning we needed towering walls to match.

Framing, Siding, and a Dash of Creativity

With the walls up, it was time for framing and siding. We stuck with rough-cut lumber for that rustic charm. Initially, I planned to use old windows for the sides, but practicality won, and we opted for plastic pieces instead - easier installation and just as lovely.

Front View: Windows with a Twist and a Gorgeous Door

Our front view is nothing short of adorable. Initially plain, we decided to add windows, repurposing some we already had. And the best part? They come with hinges for that open-close magic! The door is another story - a stunning find from a local craftsman that adds so much character.

The Greenhouse Journey Continues

We still have a way to go, but each step brings more excitement. I'm buzzing with ideas and can't wait to share our progress with you. Do you have questions about the greenhouse build? Drop a comment, and I'll cover them in an upcoming post!

Stay tuned, Besties, as we turn this dream into a lush, green reality. Here's to growth, both in our garden and in our hearts! 🌿💖

The Unfolding Tale of Our Roma VF Tomato Seedlings

Picture this: It was mid-April, and amidst drafting another post, I realized that I've yet to share our escapade with starting Roma VF seeds from scratch!

We planted these age-old seeds on April 15, eagerly awaiting signs of life. A week zoomed by... and nada. Zilch. I almost wrote them off, convinced they were duds, and even brainstormed a Plan B. But, lo and behold, as I spilled the beans last week, those little troopers did sprout – fashionably late, but they made their grand entrance!

During a routine Home Depot run for some pergola paraphernalia, my curiosity led me to the seed aisle. Ah, Roma tomatoes, my absolute faves! And there it was, the Roma VF variety, beckoning me to give it a whirl. 🌱

A Twist in the Tale: Planting in Cups!

This time around, I opted for a quirky yet effective method – planting the seeds in cups! Yes, you read that right. Cups, not flats. And, oh boy, what a game-changer! Equipped with a nifty seed dropper (another Home Depot find), the tedious task of planting those teeny-tiny tomato seeds became a breeze.

Fast forward, and we've got 30 cups, each hosting a duo of these precious seeds. Peek at the snapshots in this post to see our little green babies in their initial glory. And here they are now, a tad smaller than their siblings but growing with gusto! 🌿

Notice the leggy growth? No worries – a little more soil will fix them right up. Though, I might need to play the tough love card and thin them out a bit – they're getting a bit cozy in there!

A Verdant Conclusion

Between our late bloomers and the new Roma VF recruits, it's safe to say our garden will be teeming with tomato plants. I'm crossing my fingers that they all thrive and survive!

So, there you have it, my earthy adventure with Roma VF tomatoes.

Much like life, Gardening is filled with surprises, lessons, and, most importantly, growth. Here's to nurturing our green thumbs and souls, one seedling at a time! 🌍✨🍅

Stay green and gleeful,

Tiff
