Hey there, Besties! 🌟

Have you ever felt like your mind is a browser with 100 tabs open? If you're anything like me, keeping track of all those fleeting creative ideas can be a bit like herding cats. So, I've started a new routine that I'm super excited to share with you: my daily brainstorming sessions! 🌈✍️

Why I Started Daily Brainstorming Sessions

As the years tick by, I've noticed it's getting trickier to keep all my quirky thoughts and project ideas from slipping through the cracks. To stop forgetting and start organizing, I've dedicated a small chunk of my day solely to unleashing and untangling my thoughts. It's like a little daily detour into the fun and wild landscape of my mind.

How I Structure My Sessions

Each day, I set aside 15-30 minutes for what I call my "creative unloading zone." During this time, I jot down everything buzzing in my brain. These aren't just any notes; they're the seeds of future projects, blog posts, and those "aha!" moments that hit you when you least expect them.

Here's what a typical session looks like:

  • Timing is everything: I find that mornings work best for me right after my first cup of tea when my mind is fresh.
  • No Idea Too Small: I write down anything and everything, from a new gardening tip I want to try to a DIY project that might just be my next big blog post.
  • Inspiration Hunting: I also spend a bit of time online, browsing Pinterest, Instagram, and other blogs for inspiration. Seeing how others tackle problems gives me new perspectives and ideas that I can adapt in my own unique way.

Benefits of Brainstorming Daily

  • Clearer Mind, Better Focus: This practice helps me clear the mental clutter, making room for focused thoughts on more complex daily tasks.
  • Never Miss a Beat: By keeping a running list of ideas, I never have to kick myself for forgetting that brilliant midnight brainwave from last week.
  • Boosted Creativity: Regularly setting time to think divergently has noticeably boosted my creativity. It's easier now to connect the dots between seemingly unrelated ideas.

Tips for Starting Your Own Brainstorming Routine

  1. Choose Your Best Time: Identify when you're most alert and least likely to be interrupted. It could be early morning, late at night, or right after lunch.
  2. Keep It Fun: Use tools and apps that you enjoy using—whether it's a fancy notebook or a colorful app on your phone—to make the process more enjoyable.
  3. Make It a Habit: Like any good habit, consistency is key. Try to stick to the same time every day to build a routine that feels as natural as brushing your teeth.

Wrapping It Up

Daily brainstorming has truly been a game changer for me, turning the chore of remembering into an exciting dive into my creative depths each day. If you've been feeling overwhelmed by your own swirl of ideas, why not give it a whirl? You might find that a little daily brainstorming opens up a world of creativity you didn't know you had!

Catch you in the next brainstorm, Besties! Keep those ideas flowing! 🌊📝

Hey there, Besties! 🌟

Today, I'm taking a little trip down memory lane. Remember when I was super picky about paint brands? Yep, I was quite the paint snob. But guess what? Things have changed! While I admit some paint is better than others, I've realized that nobody will notice if I use $1 acrylic paint for projects like painting a picture frame. Let's dive into why sometimes any paint will do!

From Paint Snob to Paint Slob | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

The Early Days

In the beginning, when I first ventured into refurbishing furniture, my go-to was Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, arguably the best chalk paint available. However, its limited availability meant driving over 30 miles just to pick up a can—talk about commitment!

I also fell hard for Fusion Mineral Paint, which I still adore due to its built-in topcoat—perfect for someone like me who struggles with finishing touches. Yes, I once drove an hour each way just to get my hands on this paint!

Choosing the Right Paint

Choosing the right paint can indeed make a difference, especially for specific projects. Specialty paints like Fusion Mineral or Annie Sloan offer unique advantages, such as easier application and better durability for furniture. However, they have limitations, such as higher costs and fewer color options.

The Industry Secret

Before the trend of specialized "cabinet paints," many DIY enthusiasts and professionals simply used regular latex wall paint for cabinets—and it worked just fine! This shows that specialty paints offer certain benefits but are not always necessary.

Pros & Cons of Specialty Paint:

Pros:

- Specialty paints often come with additives like built-in sealers or primers.

- They can save time and effort in the prep and finishing stages.

- Often better for specific surfaces or uses, offering more durability.

Cons:

- Higher cost.

- Limited color choices and availability.

- It can be overkill for simple or small projects.

Conclusion

Being open to experimenting with different types of paint has taught me that flexibility can lead to creativity and unexpected success. Whether you're touching up an old picture frame or tackling a full furniture refurbishment, the right paint might just be the one you already have at hand. Life's too short to sweat the small stuff—embrace the unexpected, and sometimes, the less expensive options lead to the best outcomes!

Why I Thrift: Unleashing Creativity and Saving Money | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

Hey there, Besties! 🌟

As someone who's always dabbling in new projects and reinventing spaces, I've decided to bring a special series to our blog—a weekly thrifting adventure. So, as I dust off my thrifting gloves and step back into the treasure troves of thrift stores, I thought, what better way to kick things off than to share why I'm drawn to these havens of potential.

Unleashing My Creativity

As a creative soul, I'm all about putting a personal spin on everything I touch. Thrifting gives me the canvas to express this creativity without the high stakes. I can pick up an old chair, a worn-out table, or even quirky decorations and transform them into pieces that not only tell a story but also reflect my unique style. The thrill of the transformation process is like no other, and knowing I didn't break the bank adds to the satisfaction.

It's Cost-Effective

Let's talk numbers! While it's true that pricing can vary, I generally find that thrift stores are treasure chests of budget-friendly finds. My strategy? I go for the underdogs—the pieces that are a step away from being discarded. It's amazing what a little TLC can do; often, these items become the highlights of our home. With prices being generally lower, it's exciting to see what I can revamp next without worrying about the financial risk.

A Nod to Sustainability

In today's world, being eco-conscious is more crucial than ever. Thrifting allows me to embrace sustainability actively. By rehoming and repurposing items, I help reduce waste and give new life to things that were once destined for the landfill. It's about making the old new again and doing my part for the planet, one thrift find at a time.

Low Investment, High Reward

With five cats ruling our roost and a quite active household, things inevitably get broken or worn out quicker than you can say "thrifting"! Thrifting is a low-risk investment for me. If an item breaks or gets ruined, it's not the end of the world because I didn't invest much in it. This doesn't mean I see our things as disposable—far from it! It's about practicality and peace of mind.

So, why do I thrift? It's simple, really. Thrifting fits perfectly with my lifestyle and values. It's a blend of creativity, sustainability, and savvy budgeting. As we dive into our weekly thrifting series, I invite you to explore how you, too, can integrate thrifting into your life. Who knows what treasures you'll find?

Stay tuned for more thrifting tales and tips! And remember, every item has a story waiting to be told. Will you be the one to tell it? 🌍✨

Cozy Cottagecore Bathroom Inspiration | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

 Hey Besties! 🌟

As the new beginnings of spring creep in, I'm catching that familiar itch to revamp and renew—this time, setting my sights on a fresh home remodeling adventure! 🛠️✨

I've decided to kick things off with our oh-so-cozy second bathroom. It's quaint, yes, but it's also the perfect starter project before diving into the bigger challenges. Just like starting with a sketch before a full-blown painting, right?

Reflecting on the journey so far, it's almost surreal to think that my late husband, James, and I had transformed our entire home from a foreclosure find into our personal haven back in 2015. Here we are, nearly a decade later, and I'm buzzing to sprinkle a little more of 'me' into these walls. 🏡💕

Now, about my decor style—oh, how it's blossomed! From a pristine canvas of whites to rich wood tones paired with whites, and now? Well, now I'm all about blending what I fondly call 'cottagecore chic' with vintage, cozy, grandma vibes. Imagine a potpourri of styles that somehow dance together in perfect harmony. That's what I'm envisioning!

For our petite bathroom, efficiency is key. My game plan? Introducing a pegboard for hanging towels—functional yet stylish. Above this, I'm thinking of some charming wallpaper to inject a burst of personality into the space. 🌼🖼️

I've been trawling through Pinterest, gathering a collage of inspiration that sings to my soul. (You'll spot some of these mood-setters scattered right here in this post!) They capture the essence of what I'm dreaming up: a space that's not just a bathroom but a little nook of nostalgia and warmth, a true reflection of me.

"Don't be afraid to start again. You’re not starting from scratch this time; you’re starting from experience."

Hey there, Besties! 🌟

Guess what? I just celebrated another trip around the sun a couple weekends ago! 🎉 And oh boy, do I have some tales to tell. You know, sometimes I think my spirit guides must've been a bit too generous with the "experience" buffet, cramming a lifetime's worth of lessons into these last few years. It's been a wild ride, filled with ups, downs, and everything in between. But here's the kicker: despite the rollercoaster, I'm still here, still standing, and still grateful for every single moment.

Every hiccup and hurdle are not just random mishaps; they're part of this intricate blueprint designed to help us evolve, adapt, and, ultimately, shine. | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com

Turning a year older always brings its share of contemplation, doesn't it? This year, more than ever, I found myself wrestling with the idea of aging, not because I fear getting older, but because life, in all its unpredictable glory, has been tossing me a few extra curveballs lately. It's in these moments, amidst the whirlwind of challenges, that I find myself whispering, "This too shall pass."

But here's the heart of what I want to share with you today: Don't be afraid to start again. You see, when life beckons us to begin anew, it's not a sign of failure or regression. Far from it. It's an invitation to lean into the wisdom we've accumulated, the battles we've braved, and the strength we've sculpted from our struggles. We're not starting from scratch, my friends. We're embarking from a place rich with experience, insights, and a resilience that only comes from having weathered a few storms.

So, as I blew out the candles this year, amidst the mixed emotions and reflections, I made a promise to myself—a promise to embrace every fresh start, to view each day as a new opportunity to frame my story through a lens of growth and gratitude. Because, let's face it, life's kinda like our biggest DIY project ever, right? Every hiccup and hurdle are not just random mishaps; they're part of this intricate blueprint designed to help us evolve, adapt, and, ultimately, shine.

Remember, Besties, we're all in this grand 'Earth School' workshop together. And just like my cozy crafting corner, where every project starts with a vision and a bit of faith, our lives are canvases awaiting our creative touch. So, here's to starting over, to painting our days with bold strokes of hope, and to remembering that every moment is a chance to craft something truly beautiful.

Until next time, keep shining, keep loving, and most importantly, keep crafting your masterpiece. 🛠️🌱✨
