Garden | July 2019

Garden update for July 2020 | On The Creek Blog

Here's the garden in July 2019!

The garden is taking off!

Lots of little veggies are starting to take shape!

There are quite a few little tomatoes!  Both the Healthy Kick tomatoes & San Marzano are doing okay.  All my tomatoes plants have a lot of dead leaves this summer, so the leaves aren’t there to produce a ton of tomatoes.  But they’re doing great for what I’m working with!  There are definitely a lot more tomatoes than last summer, though!  I’ve been working hard to keep up on the garden & remove the dead stuff before it ruins the entire plant!

I have a couple of little peppers forming!  It’s weird, but there’s one pepper plant that is so much bigger than the rest.  It started off the same as the other ones & grew huge one day!  All the pepper plants seem to be doing well, though!

Between the tomatoes & peppers, I’m hoping to have enough of a harvest to make sauces with!  I didn’t have a good enough yield to do anything with them last year, so I’m hopeful I can do something this year!  I want to make spaghetti sauce & salsa!

Now on to the squash!  There’s squash for days!  We’ve already harvested a couple zucchini & there is yellow squash that will be ready soon!  Squash always seems to do well in our garden & this year is no exception!

Another plant that does well in our garden are cucumbers!  We’ve harvested a few cucumbers already & they’re so delicious!  I normally make pickles from them, but I’ve been enjoying fresh cucumbers on my salads this year!  There are more cucumbers coming in & I’m loving it!

We tried muskmelon & watermelon for the first time this year.  I didn’t have a lot of expectations for them because I’ve never done them before. I also wasn’t sure how they would work in our garden.  I’m happy to report that they’re both doing well!  Since I took these photos, both the watermelon & the muskmelon has produced tiny fruits!  There are so many of them too!  I hope they can hang on & produce a full melon!  I’m still super cautious, but it’s looking good so far!

The pumpkins are also doing well!  The vines are starting to spread everywhere!  There are no tiny pumpkins yet, but there’s still time!  The plants look healthy & I like what I’m seeing from them!

Last, but not least, the corn!  We planted the corn in late June &, for its age, it’s looking great!  At least one of the areas we planted is!  It’s in full sun & is here for it!  The other area is partial shade & the ground is a lot more wet, so it’s not doing its best!  It was also planted super close together so that’s not helping things either.  My husband thinned it out a little & made another row with the thinned corn, so we’ll see how that goes.  The entire thing was an experiment anyway, so anything that comes from it will be great!

So that’s the garden update for July!  Hopefully we’ll be ready for a bigger harvest in August!  I can’t wait to try the tomatoes!
