Spring Yard Walk 2019

White lilac // spring yard walk | On The Creek Blog
Come with me as I look over the various plants in our yard & see how they're doing after the winter!

Does anyone else hold an annual address for the state of their yard plants?

Like intentionally walking around their yard, looking at all of their trees/plants to see how they've held up after the winter?

I think it's my new favorite yearly activity!  It's so cool to see all the perennial goodness!

Today, I'll be taking you along for the walk!

Overall, everything has been super slow growing over here!  I see other people's plants in full bloom & mine are just getting started.

Also...I really need to weed around my plants!  I'm waiting until we get mulch & I'll weed & mulch all at once.  We've been putting off getting mulch until it's on sale again but I'm getting so impatient!

Here's a few of my plants & how they're doing:

Hosta Plants
Last year, my dog trampled down my hosta plants & it was a hot mess. At the time, I wasn’t worried about my future hostas because they’re a super resilient plant & I figured they would be back this year in full force!

I began to get worried when I started noticing my hosta plants weren’t coming up this year. Not even a little bit. I looked at my mom’s hostas & they were practically full grown & mine weren’t even beginning to come up!

But! They eventually started & now they’re the cutest little plants. I do think some of them ended up dying, but they’re back! At least I won’t have to divide them?! Now I just have to keep the dog out of them!

Peonies
Last year, my mom divided some of her peonies & gave us some to plant. Again, they were super slow in coming up, but now they’re here! Since they’re new to our soil, I’m not sure if they’re going to flower out this year but I’m glad they made it this far!

Apple Trees
My parents gave us 2 apple trees last year & I was super surprised to see one is already flowering out! I assumed we’d have to wait a few years for that kind of action! At this rate, maybe it will produce an apple or 2 this year? It will be so great to harvest apples in the future from these trees!
I really want to plant blueberry bushes but with our yard regrading issues, I’m still holding off until we have a permanent place for them!

Grapes
It took forever (3 years!), but the grapes we planted are finally taking off! I know you sometimes have to wait for plants to acclimate, but I was getting super worried about our grapes! They were growing but they just weren’t really doing anything & I thought they would never produce grapes! It turns out, this is the year for them! I’m so excited to harvest my own grapes! I think there are 4 different seedless kinds growing over there! It’s been so long that I forgot what kinds we planted! I guess it will be a great surprise!

White Lilacs
I was mowing the lawn the other day & smelled lilacs & got super excited! That meant my white lilac tree/bush was blooming! Then I was super disappointed to discover that there were only 2 flowers! It seems like everyone else’s lilacs are in full bloom & mine are just starting! I guess there’s still time for more flowers, but I’m so impatient!

Purple Lilacs
Last year, I wrote about our purple lilac purchase & I was hoping for some huge growth from it this year, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. It looks like the entire top of the plant is dead & it’s only getting leaves at the bottom. Hopefully the bottom will flower out, but I have no idea what to expect!

Roses
I was super excited last year when our 10 cent roses began to bloom! I thought for sure we’d be able to put them in the ground this year & there would be roses everywhere! But, I think we waited way too long to put them in the ground & now they’re dead! They looked dead when we put them in the ground, but we’re giving them one last chance to take off! A couple looked like they had signs of life, so we’re hoping for the best! If these don’t take off, maybe we’ll find some more cheap roses to plant!

So that’s the state of our yard plants for this year! We’re in the process of planting lots of bulbs so I can’t wait to see how they do this year/next year!
