The difference between determinate & indeterminate tomatoes | on the creek blog // www.onthecreekblog.com
 Hey Besties! 🌟

Today, let's dive into the world of tomatoes and figure out which variety best suits our garden's vibe. It's like choosing between two fantastic dance partners - Determinate and Indeterminate tomatoes. Both have unique rhythms and understanding their moves can elevate our gardening journey! I'll also spill the beans on the tomato varieties I'm grooving with this year.

💃 Determinate Tomatoes

Picture this: Determinate tomatoes, or bush tomatoes, are like a choreographed dance routine. They grow up to a certain height, strike a pose with flowers on top, and that's their final act. Imagine an entire troupe performing in sync - these plants bear fruit all at once, then take a final bow. Perfect for a canning flash mob, right?

They're ideal for compact garden spaces, growing only about 3-4 feet tall. Many Roma varieties fall under this category, making them the go-to for those neat and tidy garden spots.

🌱 Indeterminate Tomatoes

Now, meet the freestyle dancers of the tomato world - Indeterminate tomatoes. These wild vining types don't follow any height script. They'll keep growing and grooving until Frost calls curtains. Producing tomatoes at different intervals, they're fab for fresh eating or small-batch canning.

But hey, they need space to show off their moves and a bit of guidance, as these plants can soar up to 6-8 feet tall. Surprising stars like Beefsteak and even San Marzano varieties belong to this group. They're the ones keeping the garden party going all season!

🍅 My Tomato Line-Up

This year, my garden is hosting three tomato guests: Roma VF, Big Mama, and SuperSauce. Roma VF is my solo determinate performer, while Big Mama and SuperSauce, both indeterminates, are my garden's dynamic duo, big enough for all my canning adventures.

Choosing the right tomato variety is like picking the perfect playlist for our garden party - it can totally transform the experience!

Keep dancing in your gardens, and remember, every plant has its rhythm. Happy gardening! 🌍✨🍅

using a single stake to support a tomato plant | On The Creek Blog // www.onthecreekblog.com
Using a single stake as a tomato support!

My parents have been gardening for as long as I can remember.  Growing up, I never paid much attention to their gardening.  It just wasn't on my radar growing up.

I started my own gardening journey 4 years ago.  Since then, I have been all about gardening!  I started noticing other gardens & everything that is put into them.  Everyone's garden is different & I love seeing the different ways people garden.

My parents' garden is a great example of this.  They do gardening quite differently than I do.  One of the ways we're different in gardening is our tomato supports, which is the subject of today's post.

For their tomato supports, my parents use a single stake method.

Here are the tomato & pepper varieties we started from seeds this year!

If you remember our seed starting adventures from last year, we just used some random seeds we already had.

Since I was buying new seeds this year, I was a little more selective in my varieties.  I toned it down quite a bit too--I only chose 3 tomato varieties this year!

I also started peppers from seed this year so I picked out 2 varieties of peppers.

I spent quite a while browsing the Burpee website in search of the perfect seeds before I made my purchase.

Here's what I ended up with:

Seed Starting 2021 | On The Creek Blog // www.onthecreekblog.com
Seed starting 2021 is underway!

I began my 2021 seed starting in mid March.  It is a little early for seed starting but I was too excited to wait any longer!

The suggestion for my zone is to seed start about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.  Our last frost date is in mid May.  I'm still going to wait to plant outside until Memorial Day weekend just to be completely safe.  That will put my seedlings at about 10-11 weeks (I planted on different days).

To seed start, I used a peat pellet greenhouse.  I used the pellets last year & loved how easy they were to work with.  I also like how the entire flat of plants is in its own greenhouse.

Using the peat pellets can seem a little costly, but it averages out to around 25 cents a plant between the pellets & seed costs.

Garden update for August 2020 | On The Creek Blog

Garden update for August 2020!

When I was going through my pictures from August, I found out I only took pictures of the tomatoes!  I'll give you the update on everything else, but I guess you will only see the tomatoes!

The tomatoes really showed up in August!

I will have to do another post about all the harvesting because it was a lot!  Even though I'm not the biggest fan of canning, we ended up canning quite a bit of pasta sauce & salsa!

Here's what we planted in the garden this year!

We planted a lot this year in the garden & I wanted to make a post to document everything!

We didn't intend on having a big garden this year but it just worked out that way!  Our old tomato seeds did really well & we ended up with a lot of tomato plants!

The old seeds took a while to grow, so thinking nothing was happening, I went & bought more tomato seeds.  Then everything started growing all at once!  I did notice that the new seeds matured a lot faster than the older seeds, but everything seems to be doing alright.

Planting tomatoes in the garden | On The Creek Blog

Planting the 2020 garden!

We went big with this year's garden!

After the success of our tomato seedlings, we ended up with our largest garden to date!

This year, we planted a little bit of everything.  Because we planted so many things, I'm working on another post that lists everything.

The only plants we bought this year for the garden were the pepper plants.  Everything else we started from seeds.

We've never started this may veggies from seeds before, so I'm excited to see how they'll turn out!

Transplanting small, leggy tomaotes into larger containers | On The Creek Blog
Transplanting tomatoes into larger cups!

Over the weekend, we transplanted our tomatoes into cups!

As I said in my seedling update post, my tomatoes were getting super leggy. They needed transplanted ASAP!  I wasn't quite ready to put them in the garden just yet, so we transplanted them into bigger containers.

This proved to be an enormous task!

My husband & I worked for HOURS getting these little tomatoes transplanted!

It was quite the task but I'm so happy with the results!

Seed Starting // tomato varieties planted | On The Creek Blog
I shared our seed starting adventures yesterday & now I want to show you what seeds we planted!

Because we used what we already had, we got quite the variety of tomato seeds:  beefsteak, snaking, paste & storage.

I think this is the perfect introduction to planting tomatoes from seeds because of the variety!

I can also see what kinds I like!

Here’s a close up of the varieties:

Seed starting for the garden | On The Creek Blog
Over the weekend, we started some seeds for our 2020 garden!

Seed starting is something I didn’t think was going to happen this year.

While I love having a garden, I tend to go about it in a more simple way.

We usually buy plants at a local greenhouse at the end of May.  It has worked out well for us in the past.  It’s easy to choose the best plants & put them in the garden.  Seed starting is a different thing…

A thing I guess I’m going to be learning about!
