DIY Rustic Shiplap in the Kitchen

A rustic wood wall in the kitchen!

I mentioned in an earlier post that I’m trying to do one home project every weekend.  This is the project that started them all!  We actually did this wall before Christmas, but I'm just getting around to posting it now!  You might have seen it in this post!

I’ve been wanting to do a wood wall in the kitchen forever.  I really want to do wood walls all over our drywall, but I wasn’t sure if I would like it.  The kitchen wall seemed like a good place to start.  It’s big enough that I could see if I liked it, yet small enough to be completed in a short time.
Now there’s a couple of different ways to do a wood wall.  The way I was planning involved staining raw lumber.  I even picked out some stains so when the time came, I would be ready.  Then my husband & I went to Lowe’s one night…

I honestly can’t remember why we went to Lowe’s that night.  But, as we were browsing around, we came across these solid wood shiplap planks.  I thought they were really cool & super affordable.  We were willing to try them on this little wall, so we picked up a few packs & got started a couple days later.

Here’s what the wall looked like before we started.  We began by laying out all of the wood planks.  They come in various sizes right out of the pack.  They’re also super thin & crack easily.  Our packs had some cracks, but nothing so bad that we couldn’t cut a piece & still use it.  The look of them is super authentic.  They’re actual real wood planks.  It was like I went to an old barn somewhere & gathered the lumber.  They’re that good.

I also loved the shiplap aspect.  I was looking for shiplap that was super light weight & this is it.

To get started, we first marked the studs on our wall so we would know where to nail the shiplap.

(Side note:  One thing I love about our home is that 90% of it is log so we don’t have to try to find studs in the wall!)

Then it was time to install the shiplap.

My husband did a complete random pattern with the wood.  He started with one full piece at the top & worked his way down, varying the pattern each time.  He used his miter saw to cut the planks & nailed them on with his finish nail gun.  Even though the process was easy, it still took a fairly long time to get everything just right.  He also had to cut around a couple wall outlets, which took more time.

I picked up some super neat outlet covers at Hobby Lobby & replaced our old ones when we were doing the wall.

Overall, I’m super happy with how the wall turned out!  I think I’m more happy that I didn’t have to stain anything!  The only thing about the wall I’m not a big fan of is the color.  Now, the color is beautiful, but it really doesn’t go well in our home.  Our house has a lot of warm wood tones going on & this shiplap is ‘Gunmetal Grey’.  I saw that it’s also available in ‘Raw Umber’, which I think would go better in our home.  It’s currently unavailable, so I might have to go a different route if we want to do another wood wall in the future.  But the installation was super easy!

I would totally do a wall like this again!  It’s super authentic without all of the work!
