A small shelf gets a super cute chippy makeover!
I got this little shelf at our annual yard sale this year. Yeah, I know it’s kind of weird to bring stuff home from your own yard sale but I thought it was super cute!
If I’m being honest, I’m not a fan of little shelves like these. I used to think little shelves would be super easy to paint & flip, but they’re really not. There’s not a ton of resale value there. Also, shelves tend to have tons of sides to paint! I hate waiting for one side to dry so I can flip it over & paint another side!
But, the shape of this shelf was super cute already so I decided to give it a little makeover. Painting one shelf wasn’t going to be so bad!
For this project, I used some simple chalk paint that I think I got at JoAnn. I used to be all about chalk paint so I have several kinds floating around. The color I used is called ‘Plaster’ & it’s a pretty basic white.
Once I painted everything a few times to cover it all, I started distressing around the edges. Chalk paint is super easy to distress even when it’s dry. It’s basically made for distressing. It doesn’t start to cure until the topcoat is applied. That means you can keep coming back to it & distressing at your leisure.
Once I was satisfied with my distressing, I added a wax top coat. I’ve been having a lot of topcoat problems lately but wax always works well for chalk paint.
Once everything was complete, it was time to display the shelf! I took a few little succulents I got at Michaels a long time ago on clearance & put them in the little compartments! I think it looks super cute!
For now, I just put the shelf above my oven. It’s a cute little spot for it & gives a little character to an otherwise empty area!
