A simple raised garden bed created with railroad ties!
After the garden success of 2017, I’m feeling pretty confident in my garden abilities! I’m so confident that I decided to do a much larger garden this year!
I knew I wanted to do a raised garden bed again this year. To achieve a bigger garden, I used railroad ties as the base of the garden. The only downside to using railroad ties is that they’re super heavy to move around! Otherwise, they make a great barrier from the normal yard situation!
I used railroad ties because that’s what I had on hand. I’m all for using what you have & that’s what I had at the time.
Instead of tilling up an area (I’m all about not having any weeds!), I decided to use topsoil & the same manure/compost I used in our beds last year. The mixture worked amazingly last year, so I wanted to continue with it again this year. I first put a layer of plastic down to act as a weed barrier & then put the mixture on top.
I got tired at the end of last year’s season & didn’t take care of my little garden beds. That caused a lot of weeds to form at the beginning of this season. I’m hoping to avoid that this year by thoroughly going through the beds at the end of the season & possibly covering up the garden. I’m not going to let that expensive soil go to waste again!
Now the next step is to head to my local greenhouse to get plants! I can’t wait! I’m thinking lots of tomatoes & some peppers! We’ll see what I find!
Also, here’s a funny picture of me! I was on my way to a bridal shower when I threw on my barn boots & quickly posed for photos! Here I am in my ‘farm casual’ look! Haha!
Look like a great space! Thanks so much for sharing at our To Grandma's House We Go DIY, Crafts, Recipes and More Link party! Pinned. Hope to see you next week!
