sunflower seedlings | On The Creek Blog // www.onthecreekblog.com
Seed starting little sunflowers!

Our foster kiddo randomly brought home a sunflower seed packet a few weeks ago.

The funny thing about the seeds were that they were very vague.  The only information I could find on the packet is that they are sunflowers!  There's no variety listed at all!  I have no idea if they're going to be small or large sunflowers or even what color they will be!

Because we're still not sure where we'll be planting them, I decided to seed start them first.  This was my first time seed starting sunflowers & it went great!  Out of the 8 seeds I planted, 6 of them became seedlings!

I always find it weird that given the same conditions, seeds take off differently.  While we have some larger seedlings, there are still a couple small ones in there.

Here are the tomato & pepper varieties we started from seeds this year!

If you remember our seed starting adventures from last year, we just used some random seeds we already had.

Since I was buying new seeds this year, I was a little more selective in my varieties.  I toned it down quite a bit too--I only chose 3 tomato varieties this year!

I also started peppers from seed this year so I picked out 2 varieties of peppers.

I spent quite a while browsing the Burpee website in search of the perfect seeds before I made my purchase.

Here's what I ended up with:

Here are some of my best posts about gardening!

I can't believe I have been gardening for 5 years this year!

In that time, my gardening skills have grown😀 & changed quite a bit!

I began my gardening journey by using small raised beds & buying all my plants.  In 5 years, it has grown into a huge tilled garden & seed starting everything.

I talk a lot about gardening here on the blog & I wanted all my garden tips in one place.  That's why I'm creating this little gardening guide.

I have learned so much in my gardening journey & I'm always looking for ways to do things better.  This guide will be updated periodically as I write more posts & learn more skills.

Seed Starting 2021 | On The Creek Blog // www.onthecreekblog.com
Seed starting 2021 is underway!

I began my 2021 seed starting in mid March.  It is a little early for seed starting but I was too excited to wait any longer!

The suggestion for my zone is to seed start about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.  Our last frost date is in mid May.  I'm still going to wait to plant outside until Memorial Day weekend just to be completely safe.  That will put my seedlings at about 10-11 weeks (I planted on different days).

To seed start, I used a peat pellet greenhouse.  I used the pellets last year & loved how easy they were to work with.  I also like how the entire flat of plants is in its own greenhouse.

Using the peat pellets can seem a little costly, but it averages out to around 25 cents a plant between the pellets & seed costs.
