Making DIY tomato supports!
This is our second year constructing DIY tomato supports.
Last year we placed a single row of stakes down one side of our tomatoes. We then wrapped wire around the tomatoes & attached it back to the stakes.
While this method worked, I felt it wasn't as supportive as it could be. Our tomatoes got to great heights last year & needed a ton of support.
I still liked the staked support idea so we decided to expand on it this year.
Since we still had the staking supplies from last year, we used them again this year.
For our tomato supports this year, we essentially built a big tomato cage for the plants. We placed stakes on either side of the tomato plants in a few areas down the row. Then we ran wire down both sides. We left enough wire to add on when the tomatoes get taller.
Next we started weaving the tomato plants into the trellis. It has been a lot easier this year because there is wire on both sides so the plants have room to spread out.
Every time I go out to the garden, I try to weave the tomatoes around so they're better supported. We did a couple varieties this year that produce larger tomatoes, so I want them to be as supported as much as possible.
