Here's the garden update for June 2020!
The garden is off to a great start this year!
We
planted the garden over Memorial Day weekend this year. When we planted, the tomatoes were super tiny & I was afraid they weren't going to make it. A few weeks in, I added the
natural blood meal to the plants. Then they really started to take off!
Our tomato plants are now huge! They're the biggest tomato plants we've ever grown & it's only a little into July!
The tomato plants are so gigantic that we're trying to come up with ways to support them! I'll probably do another post soon detailing how we're supporting our tomatoes because it's...a lot! We started off with tomato cages & stakes but they're quickly outgrowing them! I never expected our tomatoes to be this ginormous this year!
Our pepper plants are still a little small. I've been meaning to add blood meal to them, which I think will enhance their growth. One pepper plant already has a little pepper on it tough!
Everything else we planted in the garden was directly sowed & they all seem to be doing great! A few of the old seed packets we planted didn't do anything, but we planted new things over them & the new plants are already coming up!
Our corn is doing great as well! Last year, we planted our corn s
uper late in the season, so I'm glad we planted it on time this year! It's already super tall!
We have several areas on our property for pumpkin vines & they're doing quite well too! This is only a small area where we have pumpkins. I can see this eventually taking over the yard quite a bit! Last year, our pumpkin vines only produced 2 pumpkins! My husband kept adding dirt around the vines last year & I think it impacted their growth. This year, we're just letting them go!
June was a super hot month & we also got a lot of rain. I think both things helped a lot in the growth of the plants. We also watered the plants in the evening on days where it didn't rain. Whatever is going on, the plants are loving it! It's getting to the point where the garden is going to get out of control & I'm here for it! I'd much rather have an out of control garden with vines everywhere than a garden that doesn't produce!
